The Alcove Center For Grieving Children And Their Families
Last updated on October 24, 2007

The Alcove Center offers grief support services for children and their families who have lost a significant person in their lives.

Description:
The Alcove serves children 3-18 years of age who are grieving the death of a loved one. We use a peer support model and have specially trained volunteer grief counselors who conduct the bereavement groups. Children and their parent/guardian attend the group sessions every other week from 6:30- 8:00 pm and there is no fee for the services.

We also conduct school outreach programs in various schools throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Newly Added Adult support groups, however children and their family members are our primary focus.

History:
The Alcove bereavement program was founded in 2001 by Mindy Shemtov and Pat Smith, licensed clinical social workers who identified that there were no grief support services in the area available for children.
The groups were initially held in a loaned space from Grace Lutheran Church in Somers Pt. Mindy and Pat ran the groups and started with 6 participants. We now have more than 30 volunteer grief counselors and have grown to 3000 square feet of rented space, serving over 80 children and their caregivers.
The Alcove is a 501 c(3)non-profit organization that depends on contributions from families, community organizations and corporate and foundation grants.
