Working with the community, Providence Center provides educational programs and enrichment activities for adults and children in the Fairhill/West Kensington section of Philadelphia.

Description:
Providence Center serves the Fairhill/West Kensington section of North Philadelphia; the center is located on 4th Street near Lehigh Avenue. An After School and a Summer Program are offered for elementary children from local public and private schools. Teens are served by a Mentors Program in which they work with the children in the After School Program and receive job and cultural enrichment training. Adults attend the five English as a Second Language (ESL) Program weekday mornings and evenings and a Monday morning Sewing Class. Neighborhood women attend a monthly support group and spring and fall retreats. Families have a spring retreat and year-round Family Visiting is available.

History:
Providence Center was founded in reaction to Church and school closings by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia of two adjacent Catholic parishes in 1993. The closings resulted in sudden program cutbacks and the termination of vitally needed services to the community. The sisters wanted to remain in the area where they had lived and taught for many years. Providence Center was established and the neighborhood survey was conducted to determine what programs the Center would establish.
