The mission of the Department of Community Services is to provide support for the recreational, informational, cultural, housing and public service needs of the community. New Castle County is the county government which provides services to enhance the quality of life for its citizens through the following governmental agencies: library services, community development services, community housing services, sports and recreation services, senior services, and Rockwood Mansion Park services.

Description:
Rockwood Mansion Park is operated by New Castle County's Department of Community Services for the benefit and enjoyment of the public while emphasizing the historic, educational, cultural, and recreational properties of the main house and grounds.

History:
Rockwood consists of a rural Gothic manor house built in 1854 by Joseph Shipley, a Quaker merchant banker. Six acres of grounds surrounding the museum remain landscaped in the Gardenesque style. It was listed on the historic register of Historic places in June 1976. The house is lavishly furnished as it was in 1895 when Shipley's relatives, the Bringhurst family lived there. It is filled with many original pieces of furniture, textiles, paintings and much more. The house is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday from 10-3. Admission is $5.00 for adults. The 2 miles of illuminated walking trails are open until dusk.
