Medical Students for Choice is dedicated to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive healthcare choices by creating tomorrow's abortion providers and pro-choice physicians.
Description:
Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) is dedicated to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive healthcare choices. MSFC recognizes that one of the greatest obstacles to safe and legal abortion is the absence of trained providers. As medical students and residents, we work to make reproductive health care, including abortion, a part of standard medical education and residency training. MSFC works with its grassroots network to bolster support and activism; reform medical school curricula and residency programs to include reproductive health and abortion care; expand education and training opportunities in abortion and reproductive health; and support residents seeking reproductive health clinical training after graduating from medical school.
History:
MSFC is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2008. Outraged by the stigma and isolation facing pro-choice medical students and the threat of violence to physicians, medical student Jody Steinauer founded MSFC in 1993. Steinauer knew the serious shortage of abortion providers would only get worse – medical schools were simply not addressing the topic of abortion, and new physicians were graduating with little, if any, exposure to this common procedure. Steinauer and a few classmates began to build a national network of pro-choice medical students working to make abortion a normal part of reproductive health education. Today we have over 10,000 members and chapters at 126 medical campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada.
