The Speaker's House is a non-profit institution, founded to purchase and restore the home of Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, first Speaker of the House of Representatives, for educational purposes
Description:
Run by a board of trustees, The Speaker's House is a true grass-roots effort to preserve the home of one of Pennsylvania's most important politicians. Future programs include an archaeology field school and workshops that will allow for hands-on experience in restoration of a historic property.
History:
In 2001, the home of Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg was slated to be purchased by a commercial developer and razed. A group of community activists founded Save the Speaker's House, Inc. with the intention of raising money to purchase and restore the house, with the intention of turning it into a historic house museum. With funds from individuals, private foundations, corporations and government agencies, the group was able to raise enough money to purchase the house. In 2006, they were granted over $400,000 from the Montgomery County Open Space Program to gain free and clear title to the house and property and to permanently preserve the property as open space. Now know as The Speaker's House, the organization is run by a board of trustees and one full-time staff person. Plans are underway to develop a dynamic restoration process that will allow us to keep the house open during the restoration so visitors can learn more about the painstaking process of historic preservation and restoration.
