The mission of the UMDF is to promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families.
Description:
Welcome to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation- bringing hope, energy and life to individuals and families affected by these debilitating diseases, hereditary disorders that affect the cells' ability to produce life-sustaining energy.
The UMDF offers support to all sufferers of mitochondrial disorders regardless of diagnosis, suspected or confirmed. Our mission is to promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families. Approximately every 15 minutes, a child is born who will develop a mitochondrial disease by age 10. Mitochondrial disease is the body's inability to convert food into energy, often resulting in organ failure, seizures and vision or hearing loss. These diseases can affect any organ, appear as any disease and occur at any age. For many, mitochondrial disease is fatal. The UMDF is represented across the nation through volunteers who operate more than 50 local chapters, groups and ambassador programs. Please help us redefine hope for the thousands of children and adults whose lives are compromised or shortened by the effects of mitochondrial disease. We need your support.
History:
The UMDF was founded in 1996 through a merger of several smaller foundations established by those who had lost loved ones to the disease. Starting as a volunteer organization based in a home basement, the UMDF has grown into an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that has donated nearly $6 million to research, making it the largest non-governmental contributor of grants focused solely on mitochondrial disease.
