The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, founded in 1787, is a scholarly and cultural institution dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of the roles of physicians in contemporary life and the U.S. healthcare system.
Description:
The College is home to the Mütter Museum, the Benjamin Rush Medicinal Plant Garden, and the Historical Medical Library. Our outreach programs include Philly Health Info, a regional health information website. The Mütter Museum was founded in 1858 to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical anomalies. Today, it serves as a valuable resource for educating and enlightening the public about our medical past and telling important stories about what it means to be human. The Mütter Museum embodies The College of Physicians of Philadelphia's mission to advance the cause of health, and uphold the ideals and heritage of medicine.
History:
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, founded in 1787, is the oldest medical organization in the country still in existence. Twenty-four physicians of eighteenth-century Philadelphia gathered "to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery." Today, over 1,500 Fellows (elected members) continue to convene at the College and work towards better serving the public.
