Project Forward Leap is committed to closing the gaps of academic achievement and developmental opportunities between disadvantaged children, and their advantaged peers. Accordingly, we are dedicated to the creation of optimal learning communities that enhance the chances of maximizing academic and personal growth. Successes in these learning communities should provide a foundation and momentum upon which participating schools and districts can build. The core components of PFL's strategy for achieving these goals are: accelerated curricula, master teaching practices, the mandate of intensive parental involvement, the enrollment of a critical mass of students from participating districts, and collaboration with those districts and other educational organizations.

History:
Project Forward Leap is a private, nonprofit [501(c)(3)] enrichment program that helps middle school students from inner city and disadvantaged backgrounds grow both academically and personally. PFL began in 1988 as a result of the vision and commitment of two individuals: one a professor from Millersville University and the other a successful businessman from Lancaster. Joined by others who became founding board members, they sponsored the first group of 37 students from Lancaster City, Columbia Borough, and Solanco School Districts for a summer program at Millersville University.

Since that experimental step the program has grown dramatically. Beginning with the summer of 1994, eligibility for PFL admission was extended to students from ten elementary schools in depressed areas of Philadelphia. Active enrollment has been as high as 310 middle school children in recent years. Approximately 900 PFL alumni currently enrolled in high school or college are served by the program through SAT preparation courses, tutorial services, college and career counseling, referrals to successor programs, and other activities designed to support them as they pursue their education.
