As a health care provider to America's veterans, the Philadelphia VA Medical Center (PVAMC) is dedicated to providing the highest quality of health care and meeting the ever changing needs of its diverse patient population.

History:
The Philadelphia VA Medical Center (PVAMC) provides health care for some 433,000 veterans living in America's fifth largest metropolitan area and surrounding seven counties. The PVAMC, the second largest VA medical center in Pennsylvania, is a VA acute referral center for the tri-state area and offers a wide range of advanced high tech treatments for the special needs of veterans. The facility is staffed by more than 1,500 employees and supports more than 150 acute beds and a 240-bed Nursing Home Care Unit. The PVAMC is internationally recognized for substance abuse treatment and research. The PVAMC was selected to serve as a Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC), a Parkinson's Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC), and a Center for Health Equity, Research and Promotion (CHERP). The Philadelphia VA Medical Center maintains an active research program with more than 225 research projects underway involving all clinical disciplines, with more than 155 investigators and technicians. Major research emphasis includes: substance abuse, nutrition, weight loss, Rheumatology-Immunology, cardiology, gastroenterology, Hepatitis C, Parkinson's disease, mental illness and health services research and development.

 From I-95 North (Delaware, Baltimore, Washington) Follow I-95 past the Philadelphia International Airport to Exit 13 (To I-76 West/291 - Valley Forge) continue following the signs for To I-76 West / Valley Forge. This will take you across the Platt Bridge, at the bottom of the bridge turn LEFT (following signs for I-76 West - Valley Forge) this is 26th Street. This flows into I-76 West (also know as the Schuykill Expressway). You will enter I-76 West from the left, move cautiously to the far right lane and take Exit 346B (old exit 41) University Ave/Civic Center. Go straight off the ramp (this is 34th Street) through two traffic lights and across a drawbridge. The street now turns into University Ave., bear LEFT, you will go under a railroad bridge, at the third traffic light turn LEFT. This is the VA Medical Center main entrance (VA Hospital Dw). From I-76 East (Pennsylvania Turnpike/Schuykill Expressway/ I-676/Pittsburgh/Harrisburg) Follow I-76 East to Exit 346B (old exit 41), Grays Ferry /University Ave. Stay RIGHT on the ramp (this is University Ave.). You will go under a railroad bridge, at the third traffic light turn LEFT. This is the VA Medical Center main entrance (VA Hospital Dw). From I-76 West (New Jersey/New Jersey Turnpike/I-295/Walt Whitman Bridge) Cross the Walt Whitman Bridge (I-76 WEST). Stay right after paying the toll, follow signs for I-76 West (Schuykill Expressway). Take Exit 346B (old exit 41) University Ave/Civic Center. Go straight off the ramp (this is 34th Street) through two traffic lights and across a drawbridge. The street now turns into University Ave., bear LEFT, you will go under a railroad bridge, at the third traffic light turn LEFT. This is the VA Medical Center main entrance (VA Hospital Dw). From Downtown Philadelphia Take Market, Walnut or South/Spruce Streets WEST to 38th Street. Turn LEFT onto 38th Street. At the second traffic light turn RIGHT. This is the VA Medical Center main entrance (VA Hospital Dw). Public Transportation The number 30 and 42 buses stop in front of the VA Medical Center. All subway surface cars to and from 30th Street and center city (EXCEPT TROLLEY #10) stop at 40th and Woodland Avenues, one block from the VA Medical Center. City rapid transit stations are also located at 40th and Woodland, 40th and Market, and University City, which are within walking distance to the VA Medical Center.
