Peter's Place's mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children, teens, and their families can get support as they work through the healing process following the death of someone significant in their lives. Our work is based on the belief that grief is a burden no child should carry alone.
Description:
Volunteers at Peter's Place provide comfort and safety for grieving children and adults.
Peter's Place offers support groups for children, teens, and young adults who have experienced the death of a loved one. On-site services are free of charge. During groups for children and teens, adult caregivers participate in their own support groups. Support groups are facilitated by a combination of masters level staff and well trained volunteer Grief Facilitators. Peter's Place also does off-site outreach programs in schools and other communities who are grieving. Volunteers participate in these outreach activities to help educate adults in the community about creating safe and nurturing environments for grieving children.
History:
Peter’s Place was founded in 2001, by a group of friends mourning the sudden death of 10-year-old Peter Morsbach. Peter’s Place is a non-profit (501 C 3) organization funded by donations and grants. Peter’s Place was founded on the belief that every child, teen, and adult deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. The principles of Peter’s Place are:
(1) Grief is a natural reaction to the loss of a loved one. Grieving people do not need to be “fixed,” but they do benefit from support.
(2) Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal him/herself.
(3) Duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual.
(4) Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process.
