Creating Opportunities for healthy and fulfilling lives

INTERAC, a not for profit social agency organized in 1969, began through advocacy efforts of local community members who were committed to bringing social service resources to the Northwest area. Today, over 30 programs contribute to the rich array of services that are offered primarily in the Northwest area of Philadelphia and that touch the lives of people citywide. Our agency mission remains essentially the same as that crafted by agency founders, “to provide exemplary services in the areas of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Aging, for the purpose of assisting people to achieve their maximum potential and enhancing their quality of life."

The mission of the Aging Services Unit of Interac is to help individuals and families live life to the fullest as they age in their communities. Programs for older adults include social services, targeted mental health services, recreational and educational programs, health education and exercise programs, adult day care and respite care. These programs reach about 2,500 older adults annually. In addition to its on-site programs, Interac provides educational programs each year to at least 10 community based older adult clubs with a combined membership of about 1,100 people and provides mental health counseling and supports to older adults through 15 senior centers. Interac is also a partner in a newly opened affordable housing apartment building for seniors, the first of its kind in the Roxborough area. The apartment building, called Pensdale, contains 65 units of HUD 202 housing and opened in June 2004. Pensdale is already fully occupied with a waiting list of approximately 100 older people.

Interac has highly skilled staff and is deeply committed to providing services that promote positive, healthy aging and that build neighborhoods and communities in which older adults are contributing members and in which they receive the supports they need.
