The Good Samaritan Shelter provides shelter to homeless, single men over the age of 18. The Mission of the Good Samaritan Shelter is that each man seeking assistance from the Good Samaritan Shelter, Inc. becomes a productive member of society, a valued employee and a respected member of his community
Description:
The Shelter provides men with the following services: • Emergency Shelter • Meals (Breakfast and dinner, Emergency Shelter only) • Transitional Housing • Bible study • Counseling • Referrals to other agencies In collaboration with other service providers, men in our shelter also receive: • Case Management • Addictions Counseling • Free Health Screenings • Life Skills Education • Job training and placement Emergency Shelter Program: The Good Samaritan Emergency Shelter provides housing for up to 4 single men for up to 60 days. The shelter opens at 5 pm daily and closes at 9am with the exception of days with severe weather. During shelter hours, there are house managers who supervise the men’s activities. There is a live-in house manager who oversees the shelter operations and maintenance. Throughout their stay, clients are provided 2 meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and provided with clothing if needed. Counseling, case management and referrals to local health agencies are also part of the program. Transitional Housing Program: Once a client has completed their stay at the emergency shelter without incidence and they have proven to be fully engaged in addressing their life circumstances, then they are eligible to participate in the Transitional Housing Program. The transitional program offers clients residency for up to 1 year during which they are expected to maintain employment, save money for future independent housing and to continue to improve their lifestyle. A nominal rent is required from the residents as they are bound be a rental agreement. The rent includes utilities as well as cable. Residents continue to receive case management from shelter staff and Building Bridges. This transitional housing period is a crucial next step after emergency shelter residency in order to better prepare clients to end the cycle of homelessness. The transitional program can accommodate up to 7 men and there is a live-in house manager providing supervision.
History:
The Good Samaritan Shelter, Inc. is a private non-profit, non-denominational organization. This Christian organization was developed in 1999 under the guidance of the New Beginnings Church of God, with leadership from St. Peter’s United Church of Christ of Chester Springs, and the Baptist Church of Phoenixville. They sought a compassionate response to the needs of homeless men in the Greater Phoenixville area. Many of these men suffer from issues such as unemployment, mental health problems, substance abuse, as well as troubled backgrounds. The Good Samaritan Shelter serves the Greater Phoenixville area, which includes: Phoenixville, Spring City, Mont Clare and neighboring areas. As a non-profit organization (501c3), the shelter is dependent on financial support from the local churches, foundation grants and general donations.
