To provide, on a daily, 24-hour basis, support, direction, assistance and intervention to those in the greater Philadelphia area who reach out by telephone seeking assistance. Toward optimizing the quality of those interventions, as well as the other related human services and programs provided, Contact will strive to recruit and advance the professional training of both volunteers and paid employees. It will seek to continually assess the community’s needs and tailor services to that demand wherever resources are available.

Description:
Contact is a nonprofit organization that provides confidential telephone-based crisis intervention and suicide hotline services to individuals throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. In addition, Contact operates a reassurance service that pairs volunteers with isolated seniors and disabled individuals. Volunteers call reassurance-service clients 365 days a year to check on their safety and provide socialization.

Over the course of Contact’s 36-year history, trained volunteers have helped more than 1.6 million at-risk callers deal with a spectrum of crisis situations and emotional challenges, including suicidal thoughts, depression, grief, job loss and domestic violence. Together, our offices in Bucks and Montgomery counties handle more than 115,000 calls per year. All of our services are provided free of charge.

History:
Contact was founded in 1971 as CONTACT Careline. In 1978, a separate organization, CONTACT Bucks County, was created to serve the Bucks County region. In 2005, CONTACT Careline and CONTACT Bucks County were merged to form Contact Greater Philadelphia.

Contact Greater Philadelphia serves Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and maintains call centers in Wynnewood, Montgomery County, and Richboro, Bucks County.

Contact is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology.

Contact is sponsored by funding from the United Way of Bucks County and grants from other foundations, organizations and individuals.
