Philadelphia District Attorney's Office
Last updated on March 11, 2008

The District Attorney's Victim/Witness Volunteer Program provides comprehensive victim services to ALL crime victims, including children who have been physically or sexually abused.

Description:
Adults and children are provided with court accompaniment, counseling (referrals), crime victim compensation, restitution, court school, victim impact statements, letters for work or school, and intimidation reports.
The primary role of the volunteer is to accompany the victim and witnesses through the trial process; and provide support and information to all victims and witnesses. Within the supportive role, it is important that the volunteer be an accepting, empathic listener. Encouragement, concern, and support for the family are critical. Training will be provided.

The hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The office is open Monday through Friday. Potential volunteers may volunteer as often as they like, but NOT LESS THAN TWICE A MONTH.

History:
The Volunteer Program began in January 1992 at 1801 Vine Street. When the program began, there was only one Victim/Witness Advocate to handle all cases involving victims. It was decided at this time to have volunteers work with the victims and witnesses, so that all victims (and witnesses)would be informed about the various victim services available for victims of crime.

Overall Experience    Experience rating
This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers interested in entering the legal profession.
I volunteered as a victim-witness support aide during college. I observed a lot of court proceedings and learned so much. The experience really paid off. This is a great opportunity! Megan Hill, Esq. Albuquerque, N.M.
