PHILADELPHIA READS, under the leadership of the Mayor of Philadelphia, is part of the national Reading First Initiative to ensure that all school children read well and independently by the end of third grade. It is a collaborative effort with the School District and the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Description:
PHILADELPHIA READS is engaged in a campaign to mobilize the Greater Philadelphia community, including individuals, organizations, businesses, institutions, communities of faith, colleges and universities to provide volunteer time, materials, books, advocacy, research and other resources for in-school, after-school and summer literacy programs.

Volunteers are needed year round: winter, spring, summer and fall. This is a great opportunity for adults, college/university students, middle/high school students (must be mature and task focused), seniors, family projects, service learning opportunities, community service requirements, and summer youth.
