Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a non-profit grass roots organization with over 600 chapters nationwide. MADDs mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. MADD is more than just moms; we are also dads, young people, impaired driving victims, concerned citizens and others who are helping to make a difference on our roadways and in our community.

Description:
MADD Southeast PA serves the citizens of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties by providing victim services which include advocacy and information on victim rights, court accompaniment, support groups, information on Crime Victims Compensation, and grief literature. Our public awareness and education programs include a speakers bureau, brochures on laws and general information, "Tie One On For Safety" (MADD Ribbon Campaign), Sober Reminder Cards, Graduation Reminder Cards, Keep It A Safe Summer (KISS), safe boating campaign, and general meetings. Some of our special events include Strides for Change, an annual 5K Walk and Festival on October 13, 2007 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, youth programs, attendance at health fairs and community days and also fundraising efforts.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of MADD. Without you, MADD would have no one to stand beside an injured survivor in court; to offer support to a grieving family member; to educate our children that alcohol is a drug; that drinking and driving is a violent crime; to work for new legislation; and to answer questions from concerned citizens.

MADD volunteers can help in a variety of ways and quarterly training is provided. If you would like more information on volunteering, please contact our office. We will gladly send an informational packet to you if requested.

History:
A woman whose daughter was killed by a repeat drunk driving offender founded MADD in 1980. The first chapter in Pennsylvania was founded in 1981. Pat Casey and Karen Holt formed the Philadelphia Chapter of MADD in 1989. The senseless and devastating loss of their children brought these two women together. Michael Marnach was killed while stationed in Louisiana serving in the Army during June of 1987. Michael and three of his friends were hit by a drunk driver. Michael and one other person were killed and the other two passengers were severely injured. The Holt Family was struck in January 1988. Two days later 13 year old Heather died. Also injured in the crash were her mother, Karen, her sister, Rachel and her brother, John Paul. Tragedy again fell on the family four years later when Joan Holt (Karen's sister-in-law) was killed by a drunk driver while walking her dog.
