The mission of the Drueding Center/Project Rainbow, as an integral part of the Holy Redeemer Health System, is to "Care Comfort and Heal." The Statement of Purpose developed by the management and staff of Drueding Center/Project Rainbow states: "We must ensure that all of our families have the skills and resources necessary to live independently and reach their individual measures of success."
Description:
The Sisters of the Holy Redeemer established Drueding Center/Project Rainbow in 1987 to provide transitional housing services for homeless women and their children. To date, more than 480 women with 900 children have benefited from our services. Drueding Center/Project Rainbow (DC/PR) provides its residents with a comprehensive schedule of on-site services including: intensive case management, life skills training, assistance in finding permanent and secure housing, full-day licensed Childcare with Head Start services and an After School program, Clinical Counseling programs for children and mothers, and Education and Employment services through our adult and child learning centers, including a Youth Services Program for children ages 8-18 and an on-site health clinic. After Care services are provided for any former residents (graduate families) of Drueding Center/Project Rainbow up to 7 years post residence at our facility.
History:
DC/PR is an acknowledged leader in providing programs for homeless women with young children. Drueding has received national and international acclaim for its service provision. On June 21, 2004 Holy Redeemer Health System was notified that Drueding Center/Project Rainbow was a 2004 American Hospital Association (AHA) NOVA Award finalist. Recognition by the AHA validates the work of Drueding Center's staff, directors, and volunteers in their ongoing efforts to improve the health status of the women and children served by the program. In 1999, DC/PR was selected as a John J. Gunther Best Practice winner by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Community Planning Development (CPD) Assistant Secretary, Cardell Cooper. In 1993, Drueding Center was one of three organizations in the United States awarded an Achievement Citation, Catholic Health Association's highest honor, while in 1992, Drueding Center/Project Rainbow received the Kolping Award, an international honor given biannually for outstanding and meritorious service to the poor. DC/PR is also featured in More Than Housing (1991), an award-winning book on homelessness and transitional housing by Joan Sprague. The Center is located at 413 West Master Street, Philadelphia, Pa. in a building, which the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer have staffed since 1931, first as a health care center for Drueding Chamois Factory employees and later as a home for Drueding retirees. The Drueding Family donated the building to the Sisters with the condition that it be used to meet the greatest need in the community. In 1987, the Sisters, with the involvement of key community and religious leaders, concluded that the single most urgent need in Philadelphia was to provide transitional housing and support services for the homeless, especially women with dependent young children living in crisis situations with nowhere to go. Drueding Center/Project Rainbow provides its residents with a comprehensive schedule of on-site services including: intensive case management, life skills training, assistance in finding permanent and secure housing, full-day licensed child care with an After School program including a Youth Services Program for children ages 8-18, Clinical Counseling services, and Education and Employment services through our adult learning center.
