History:
Nearly thirty years ago two families consulted a local neurologist for treatment and information for their children who had been diagnosed with epilepsy. The neurologist could treat the medical aspects of the disorder and offer information in that regard, however, was at a loss to offer local resource support to address the issues of school, socialization, family interaction, etc. The national epilepsy office was barely four years old and again could provide basic information about epilepsy. This is when the small, but determined group decided to explore the realities of forming a local epilepsy foundation office to address the non-medical needs of those with epilepsy and their families.
From these beginnings the Epilepsy Foundation of Philadelphia had its start in 1972. Twenty years later the area expanded to serve five counties in the Greater Philadelphia area and in May of 2001, the foundation officially services eighteen counties that make up the eastern part of Pennsylvania, thereby changing its name to Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA.
Since the early days, great strides have been made, from the early beginnings at Graduate Hospital to our current home at 919 Walnut Street, we have evolved from a completely voluntary organization to a staff of seven (7) full time people with a 501(c))(3) non-profit status, a Board of Directors, Professional Advisory Board and Honorary Board.
