Description:
THE LIGHTHOUSE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY
THE LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY SCHOOL:
The Family School has been providing quality early education services since 1972. The Family School is a Nationally Accredited Head Start Program, which provides service to 168 children ages 3 to 5 years old. Head Start services include a Multi-Cultural/Bilingual Curriculum, Child Health Development Services, Education and Early Childhood Development, Health and Safety, Nutrition, Mental Health, Parent Involvement, Early Intervention, and Reading Readiness/Language Development Services. The Lighthouse Family School also provides before and after school care. All aspects of the family school include Breakfast, lunch and snack. The Family Schools hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Family School also operates a food Share program. Free groceries are distributed to seniors and needy families on Tuesday and Thursday on a weekly basis.

YOUTH SERVICES CENTER:
The Youth Service Center is located at 141 W. Somerset and also offers programs out of The Lighthouse Athletic Field located at Front & Erie Ave. The Center provides a variety of educational, occupational, cultural and recreational programs to over a 1000 children and youth throughout the entire year. The After School Program accepts youth from 5 to 18 years old and offers individualized tutoring and homework assistance from September to June. The Recreational Program runs year-round and offers sports, arts, cultural and social activities and prevention workshops for children, youth and their families. The Lighthouse Skills for Life Program offers after-school academic support, case management and summer employment and training opportunities to community youth. The Lighthouse Baseball Program serves over 450 boys and girls ages 5-18. The Baseball Program runs from May to August, Monday-Friday 5:00 to 8:00 and Saturday 10:00-2:00. The Lighthouse Summer Day Camp offers four two-week theme based sessions serving youth ages 5-12. The Camp's hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm. The Youth Service Center also runs a Flag Football program, swimming and other sports after-school and summer programs. The Youth Service Center has a gym-performance space, fitness room, game room, classrooms/art and dance studios, computer lab and an in-door swimming pool.

ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM:
The Lighthouse Adult Education Program offers ESL, GED, Pre-GED and Adult Basic Education (ABE) in both English and Spanish. All adults 18 and older are eligible for day or evening classes. There are fall, spring and summer semesters.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
The Economic Development Program was established in 1981 and works toward the revitalization of the economy of Eastern North Philadelphia and Kensington. The program's efforts focus on the neighborhoods that comprise the city, state and federally designated American Street Enterprise and Empowerment Zone. The Economic Development Program is composed of the following components:

  1. The Job Resource Center strives to assist local residents in finding employment and/or training to meet their needs not only with local businesses but also with businesses in the tri-state area.
  2. The Business Services Center assists retail and commercial businesses with city services, government and private financing, licenses and various other technical assistance needs.
  3. The Business Rental Rebate Program serves new or expanding businesses located in the American Street Empowerment Zone.

TEEN PARENTING (TPEEP):
The Teen Parenting Education and Employment Program provides supports to older teens to bridge the gap between the world of the classroom and the world of work. The GED and Life Skills classes are held Monday through Friday, from 9:00-4:00. The Program seeks to empower young mothers between the ages of 18 and 21 years on public assistance. During the morning hours the young women participate in GED classes. In the Afternoon sessions the young women participate in workshops with diverse topics such as, life skills including human values, reaching goals, social/community services available, family/money management, computer/technology, the arts, Health/Nutrition/cooking etc...

CURFEW CENTER: The Lighthouse East Curfew Center serves the 24th and 25th Police Districts. Young people under the age of 17 caught breaking City Curfew Law during the overnight hours in those districts are taken to the Curfew Center by the Philadelphia Police. Curfew Center staff and volunteers will receive the young people in a caring environment; offer a meal/snack; interact/ dialogue with the youth; conduct an intake/ assessment process; contact parents and/or guardians; conduct a release interview process with parents/guardians; and work closely with DHS and other City offices to provide prevention/intervention services when needed. This program is heavily dependent on Volunteers!

Founded in 1893 by Ester Kelley Bradford as a settlement house, The Lighthouse has been in continuous operation serving the City of Philadelphia. Over the years, it has become a multi-service provider to a multi-cultural community. The Lighthouse is a United Way member agency.
