It is our objective to assist the residents in our multi-ethnic, non-English speaking communities in meeting the demands of today's society. By offering classes in literacy, English language and Advanced English, we are assisting in alleviating illiteracy while equipping our learners with the skills that are necessary to function in today's world
Description:
The IHM Center is a non-profit agency. We are an equal opportunity educational institution and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, handicap, age or religion. Over the years, the IHM Community has been involved in educating and helping non-English speaking newcomers. We have literacy and multi-level English classes in both the morning and evening, four times a week. Class instruction by our experienced teachers is supplemented by computer learning.
History:
The site on Lindley Avenue was opened full-time in June 1989 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. 165 adults registered for the classes. This was at the request of the people of the North Philadelphia Community. A second site was opened in West Philadelphia on Farragut Street in September 1991.0
