Equality Advocates' mission is to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in Pennsylvania through direct legal services, education and policy reform.

Description:
The Center provides direct legal services to LGBT Pennsylvanians; educates both our constituency and the larger populace; and works for policy reform.

The Center offers assistance on over 30 distinct legal issues and has assisted LGBT people in 60 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. In 2004, 33% of our callers were people of color, 48% were women, 39% men, and 13% were transgender. Our toll-free hotline allows LGBT Pennsylvanians to contact us regardless of their location or income.

In 2004, the Center responded to 636 requests for assistance – more than half were from LGBT individuals in the greater Philadelphia area – provided direct representation for more than 77 individuals, and provided more than 300 referrals to attorneys and community groups.

The Center's outreach and education activities reach more than 4,000 LGBT individuals and allies each year. We educate LGBT individuals about how to protect their rights and inform attorneys, social service professionals, and justice system personnel about the special legal issues of LGBT Pennsylvanians. The Center also produces and widely distributes in-depth publications on LGBT legal issues.

The Center's policy reform efforts include litigating cases that have statewide implications for the rights of LGBT Pennsylvanians and providing technical assistance to local governments who want to create or strenghten their anti-discrimination ordinances to protect LGBT citizens. Our attorneys and executive director work with community and business leaders, and serve on committees and task forces to work towards full equality for LGBT Pennsylvanians.

History:
The Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights was founded in 1996 by lesbian and gay activists and attorneys who identified an unmet need for direct legal services and advocacy for lesbians and gay men on a grassroots level. While some national lesbian and gay rights organizations concentrate on impact litigation at the appellate levels, a gap exists at the local and trial level for direct legal services for LGBT individuals facing discrimination. The Center fills that gap in Pennsylvania and is the only statewide organization in the country dedicated full-time to advocating equality for LGBT individuals through direct legal services, education, and policy reform.
