SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) is a program that empowers people to make a positive difference in their lives and those of their neighbors by linking individuals and community resources. SHARE provides resources and technology to build and support self-sustaining community institutions in which all may participate, serve, and lead with dignity. SHARE's efforts are rooted in response to a spiritual call to social justice.
Description:
SHARE is a program where people can purchase food packages worth $35-$45 for only 2 hours of volunteer service and the cost of your package. SHARE is open to everyone -- there are no restrictions. SHARE works because of its high level of participation, its devoted volunteers, and its dedicated host sites. SHARE offers a wide variety of food packages to meet customers' needs. Along with its value packages, SHARE offers a wide variety of meat packages, a produce package, and during the summer months, Farm Fresh packages, which feature fruits and vegetables from family farmers in Lancaster County, PA. SHARE also offers a wide variety of individual items, from fish sticks to apple pies. SHARE accepts many forms of payment, including cash, credit and debit cards, money orders, and EBT (Food Stamp Program.) For the Farm Fresh packages, SHARE also accepts Farmers Market Checks. SHARE currently serves Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, Chester and Delaware Counties. We also serve Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York Metro, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
History:
Historically, individuals living in lower income areas of Philadelphia have had a difficult time meeting the basic needs of their families. The price of food had increased to a level that left many economically disadvantaged families unable to afford to eat a nutritionally balanced diet, which resulted in both health and social ills for the communities in which they lived. In the early part of 1986, individuals and community organizations (Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese and the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank) decided to create more innovative and sustainable responses to the growing problem of food insecurity and hunger. They began a search for food programs that provided not only nutritious food but affordable food as well. A trip was made to San Diego to learn about a new food program called SHARE, and during the trip, Nutritional Development Services was approached with the idea of starting SHARE in Philadelphia. Rising to the challenge, representatives from the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, Nutritional Development Services, attorneys, and members of the business community joined forces to bring SHARE to the Philadelphia area. SHARE Philadelphia was started in response to increasing local need for food by some of our area residents. SHARE has no income eligibility requirements and continues to offer great value for a much needed resource. As its programs have expanded and grown, SHARE continues to provide nutritional food not only to the economically disadvantaged, but to all segments of the community. And it is only through the efforts of the community and volunteers that SHARE continues to be successful in its mission.
