Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers work to restore and preserve the natural environment of the Wissahickon Valley Park through community supported volunteer action.
Description:
We focus primarily on invasive plant removal, native tree planting, and trail repair. Our director works directly with the Fairmount Park Commission to ensure that our restoration efforts target the priority restoration sites identified by the Fairmount Park Master Plan. The restoration work is done primarily by volunteers from our membership and from partnering groups (schools, church groups, organizations, etc).
History:
The Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers was founded in 1997 by a group of conservation-minded volunteers that had been working actively on restoration projects in the park for many years. In 2006, more than 1,200 volunteers from 25 community groups donated over 2,700 hours to our restoration work. Volunteers helped plant nearly 500 trees and shrubs in 2006 and we already completed a planting of 70 trees in Spring 2007.
