To provide an academic, mentoring, and financial assistance program for low income public high school students of promise in Chester County who are motivated to pursue post-secondary education.
Description:
Program currently operates in the Coatesville Area, Kennett Consolidated, Phoenixville Area and Oxford Area school districts. Students are nominated in the eighth grade by their schools and are selected based on personal motivation, academic and attendance records, teacher recommendations, and desire to have a mentor. Students are matched with an adult mentor who commits to work with them throughout high school. Students also attend in-school meetings and an enrichment program geared toward preparing them for post-secondary education. Upon acceptance into an accredited post-secondary program, students are eligible to receive up to $6,000 in scholarships.
History:
Futures has served over 300 worthy disadvantaged high school students since 1996, providing before and after-school academic enrichment classes to help them overcome some of the unfair challenges they face due to their poverty circumstances. More than 80% of Futures' students are black or Hispanic. As of Spring 2007, 112 earned their diplomas and 102 or 91% have enrolled in college. Nearly all were the first in their families to have a chance to earn a post-secondary degree.
