To improve the reading, writing and basic life skills of English speaking adults and to teach non-English speaking adults to speak, read and write English.
Description:
The Literacy Council of Norristown provides one-on-one tutoring to adult students in basic literacy skills or in English for Speakers of Other Languages. In addition the Council provides group classes in English at the Council site or, by special arrangement, at other sites, e.g. churches, businesses, community organizations, etc.. The Council provides training for tutors, tutoring materials and on-going support and advice.
History:
The Literacy Council of Norristown was founded in 1984 by a dedicated group of volunteers from the Norristown Ministerium.The organization has received a grant from the State of Pennsylvania each year since 1986 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1987. The Council now serves about 100 students each year in the tutoring program and another 50 students in ESL group classes.
