The mission of the Senior Adult Activities Center is to develop, maintain and enhance the ability of the elderly to live as independently as possible for as long as possible.
Description:
The Senior Adult Activities Center makes a positive difference in the lives of the elderly by providing opportunities for the elderly to build friendships, discover a renewed sense of purpose in their lives, and reach solutions to their problems with dignity. The Senior Adult Activities Center consists of three senior centers, three satellite meal sites, and Adult Day Care. The senior centers are located in Norristown, Glenside and Ambler and host a wide range of programs, including Meals on Wheels, recreational and educational programs, social services and noon-time dinners. Noon-time dinners are also served at the satellite meal sites, two located at subsidized housing facilities in Norristown and the other at the Ukrainian Center in Abington. The Adult Day Care shares a site with the Norristown Senior Center and provides a secure and caring environment during the day for the extremely frail elderly who need constant supervision.
History:
The Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County was founded in 1965 as a one-room activities center in the Norristown YMCA. Over the years, the Senior Adult Activities Center has grown from an activities center to a multi-service agency for senior citizens. As the need for services expanded, additional senior centers were opened, one in Glenside in 1974 and another in Ambler in 1999. The meal programs were instituted along the way, the first in 1974. Today each of the senior centers operate a Meals on Wheels program for homebound elderly in the community and a Congregate Meal program for the seniors who attend the center. Adult Day Care opened in 1986 and has expanded to serve approximately 70 seniors at present.
