The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of the life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
Description:
The Nature Conservancy works all over the world to protect habitat for rare species and natural communities, and owns more than 1,600 preserves--the largest private system of nature sanctuaries in the world. To date The Conservancy has protected more than fifteen million acres of ecologically significant land in the United States, over 46,000 acres in Pennsylvania alone. With the help of its partners, the Conservancy has protected an additional 102 million acres worldwide.
History:
The Nature Conservancy began as a volunteer organization in 1951. In 1954, the first protection project was completed with the purchase of 60 acres in New York state, and the first paid president was hired in 1965. Today, we have over one million members, and we have protected more than 15 million acres in the US. We have also helped like-minded partners protect more than 102 million acres elsewhere around the world.
