The Young Women's Christian Association of the United States of America is a women's membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the Association draws together members who arrive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The Association will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.

Description:
The YWCA TriCounty Area is a women's membership movement that is sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA creates opportunities for women, girls and families to grow, develop leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. Since 1908, we have worked diligently to provide services and programs to promote positive change within our community. As a multi-service agency, the YWCA provides a broad range of services to families in need through its ongoing programs. Our programs include Creative Play Preschool, English as a Second Language, Adult Literacy, Parents' Support Group, Teen Court Community Service Project and GED Preparation Assistance.

History:
In 1908, a group of women from various Pottstown area churches gathered to plan the beginning of the YWCA. The YWCA was founded in order to meet the changing needs of women and families, and to be an advocate for social justice and dignity for all people. During our early years, we provided housing for young women, provided a place of recreation for youth, and women offered mentoring to help youth, especially girls, grow to their fullest potential. By responding to the needs of all community members, valuing differences in race, religion and sex, the YWCA continues to be a safe and supportive environment for women and their families. In the spring of 2007, the name was changed to read YWCA TriCounty Area instead of YWCA of Pottstown.
