To preserve, maintain and exhibit the studio/residence and works of Wharton Esherick, the late "dean of American craftsmen" (1887-1970). To share his life work with the public so that the may be informed, entertained and inspired.
Description:
Wharton Esherick's unique, handcrafted Studio, which houses the collection of his works (paintings, woodcuts, ceramics, sculpture, furniture and furnishings), is more an experience than a museum. The Studio is maintained as it was when Ehserick lived and worked here, so the visitor can get a view into the live and creative vision of this influencial American artist and designer. Esherick has been called "the most important American furniture designer of the 20th century." Fine Homebuilding magazine named the Studio one of the 25 most important houses in America.
History:
The Wharton Esherick Museum was founded in 1971; it has been open for guided tours since 1972. The site is a National Historic Landmark, located near Valley Forge National Park. More that 5,000 people visit the Wharton Esherick Studio annually.
