Mission: To promote volunteerism, particularly among persons 55 years of age and older, and provide opportunities for them to pursue their interests and use their abilities to help meet community needs.
Description:
Established in 1973, our agency places people, over the age of 55 years, into volunteer positions across Montgomery County. In addition to the needs identified by our six field offices, we have multiple county-wide programs staffed by volunteers. These programs address: illiteracy, youth in "at risk" situations, the frail elderly & older adults, disabled children, nonprofit agency management and two programs which address the communities "at large".
History:
The national Retired Senior Volunteer Program was authorized by Congress in 1969, through an amendment to the Older Americans Act. In 1973,RSVP projects began emerging across the country and were administered and funded through regional and state offices and sponsored by private nonprofit organizations or public agencies at the local level. In was in that year, 1973, The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County was established. Our first office was launched on the Main Line with four volunteers. Pottstown and Norristown offices followed. By the end of 1973, programs were operating in both the Lansdale and Abington areas. In January 1974, RSVP gained its sixth regional presence in the county, when an office was opened in the Perkiomen Valley.
From the outset, RSVP's six area Field Coordinators have worked closely with local organizations to develop interesting volunteer assignments, and provide mature men and women with a host of service opportunities.
