Women's Resource Center (WRC) has served the Delaware Valley for over 30 years, and is dedicated to providing accurate information and referrals for women who are in crisis or transition. WRC supports women, strengthens families, and builds communities through counseling, legal, and educational services. The Center's goal is to empower women to make informed decisions and achieve personal growth during life transitions in a safe, caring, and supportive environment.
Description:
Since its inception in 1974, Women's Resource Center has become increasingly well-known as a clearinghouse of information on human service resources for women in the Delaware Valley. Women from the five-county area routinely turn to the Center with questions about healthcare, childcare, legal issues, career development, and occasionally with urgent calls for crisis intervention. The Information and Referral Helpline is the gateway to all of Women's Resource Center's programs and services. The Center currently has 26 Information & Referral (I&R) Specialist volunteers who have been trained to provide helpful and accurate referrals. Currently, Women's Resource Center has a database of over 275 referral agencies that can offer solutions to a variety of issues. With the completion of our three-year Strategic Plan, Women's Resource Center is planning to expand the Information and Referral program to include longer hours of operation, a computer-based listing of all referrals available, and increased continuing education for our I&R Specialists.
History:
In the 1970s, a group from Central Baptist Church in Wayne, PA called the "Sojourners" held meetings to discuss the role of women in the church. As their meetings continued, the topics of discussion expanded to include the needs and issues of women in the community as well. In the Spring of 1974, an ad was placed in the Wayne and Suburban Times announcing a meeting for women interested in developing a women's center in the Wayne area. 45 women showed up for that first meeting. Their discussion targeted three specific steps toward their goal:
- Find a physical location in which to meet and plan further action
- Create a system of information and referrals
- Form support groups and design workshops focused on women's issues.
An office was set up in Central Baptist Church's mission house at 113 West Wayne Avenue, and Women's Resource Center was on its way! A grant for seed money was requested from the Valley Forge Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and in the spring of 1975, the Women's Resource Center officially opened its doors to the community. In 1977, WRC was incorporated as a nonprofit organization and became a separate entity from the Central Baptist Church.
