ASSETS' mission is to assist Montgomery County (PA)persons with limited resources, who have a personal vision for self-employment and small business, by providing hands-on training, peer mentoring & support network. Located in the heart of Norristown, ASSETS reaches out to underserved communities throughout the county such as Norristown, Pottstown, Lansdale, Ambler and beyond.
Description:
ASSETS Montco offers 13-week English and 8-week Spanish business training programs for people looking to start or expand a small business. Participants research and develop their own business plans. We also offer a unique mentorship program and ongoing technical assistance to our graduates. We welcome successful business & professional people who are willing to serve as mentors for 6 months through monthly meetings and phone contact.
History:
ASSETS Montco began in November 1996 and offered its first class January 1997. As of June 2007, we have served 425 participants and over 170 businesses have opened or expanded. More than 188 jobs have been created. ASSETS programs are associated with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA). Known worldwide for 50+ years of economic development in the 2/3 world, MEDA developed the ASSETS model for the United States in 1993. Today 19 ASSETS programs are working in underserved communities in North America. See www.meda.org. Jim Williams (B.S. Business Administration at Temple University; Norristown High, Temple and Big Five Basketball Hall of Famer) serves as the founding Executive Director of ASSETS Montco.
