To provide a continuum of quality programs & services designed to enhance the emotional, behavioral & social well-being of children & families in the communities we serve.
Description:
Friendship House is a private not-for-profit corporation registered in Pennsylvania to provide an integrated continuum of care and treatment for children, adolescents and their families. Friendship House is major children's service organization providing quality children's programs and services throughout northeastern and southeastern Pennsylvania for over one hundred and thirty years. The Pottstown location of Friendship House provides foster family care and adoption services to children and their families. Friendship House's Foster Care Program is a twenty-four (24) hour, out-of-home living arrangement, providing for the care, safety, well-being and supervision of children in the home of an approved foster family. Children admitted to this level of care have experienced some type of abuse and/or neglect and separation from their birth family. Friendship House's case management team works with the referring county to achieve permanency for the foster child: reunification with birth family; legal guardianship; adoption; independent living arrangement. Friendship House continually recruits qualified individuals to provide foster care services as approved caregivers. Friendship House's Adoption Program assists in providing timely permanency for children through various adoption services (child profile; family profile and preparation; child placement; child preparation; child specific recruitment; and post-permanency) and supporting families. Friendship House works in partnership through contracts with the Statewide Adoption and Permanency (SWAN) and Philadelphia County (DHS). The adoption program also completes independent family profiles and birth family search and reunion services for individuals associated with a prior adoption finalization through Friendship House.
History:
The "Society of the Home for Friendless Women and Children" was organized on behalf of widows and orphaned children on October 6, 1871 in the City of Scranton, PA. On October 28, 1873 the Society was chartered as a not-for-profit charitable organization. In 1945 the original by-laws and Charter were revised and the organization was renamed "Friendship House." In 1948 services were expanded to include casework and adoption, and in 1954 Friendship House began the first foster family program in Lackawanna County. Friendship House's programs have continued to grow through the years offering residential, partial hospitalization, outpatient, special education, autism, group homes, foster care, kinship care, and adoption services. Friendship House is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Today, Friendship House continues its mission to provide effective, innovative and qualitative programs and services to children and their families in need.
