ACWC empowers women by working to secure their physical safety, emotional well being, individual freedom and economic equality.
Description:
Undoubtedly, ACWC is most well known for their Violence Intervention Program (VIP), including operation of Atlantic Countys lead battered womens shelter and a 24-hour domestic violence and sexual assault hotline. Individual, group and family counseling is available for adult and child survivors of violence, along with a number of other services including legal advocacy and transitional housing. Other programs like the Child Care Network, Home To Work and WomenSource were developed in response to community needs and have become also integral ACWC programs. Home To Work provides career counseling for displaced homemakers, women who have lost their main source of family income due to separation, divorce, widowhood or the sudden disability of a partner and now find themselves faced with the need to reenter the workforce to support themselves and their families. The Child Care Network (CCN) works to expand and enhance affordable quality child care options to area parents through a number of programs and services, including Temporary Assistance For Needy Families (TANF), New Jersey Cares For Kids (NJCK) and Family Day Care (FDC). Parents may also use CCNs centralized resource and referral service for information about Atlantic Countys child care organizations. WomenSource is the name given to our newest program that coordinates our existing VIP, CCN and HTW trainings as well as develops creative and innovative new ones. WomenSource offers the community an educational environment specific to the needs of women. With WomenSource, participants will learn in a setting of physical and emotional safety, understanding, respect and comfort.
History:
Born out of the socio-political activism of the 1960s and 70s, a small group of women organized a consciousness-raising group closely affiliated with the National Organization for Women (NOW). These founding mothers began by forming a 24-hour rape counseling hotline out of their homes. In response to increasing domestic violence calls, many of the volunteers established their homes as safe houses to provide women and children with emergency shelter from a violent situation. From these humble beginnings, ACWC has evolved into a professional service agency whose reputation for advocating for womens rights is deservedly one of the strongest in the county. Based on our success over the past 25 years, ACWC has proven its value and importance and will continue to serve and grow with the community. Our future, like our past, is dedicated to bringing positive change and empowerment to womens lives.
