The Women's Center of Montgomery County is a volunteer, community organization with a primary focus on freedom from domestic violence and other forms of abuse. Our programs, policies and procedures reflect our strong commitment to empowering women.

Description:
The Women's Center is a volunteer powered, non-profit community organization that provides multiple services to women, such as crisis intervention counseling, ongoing support (one on one, or in groups), orientation to and accompaniment through the court system, as well as information and referral. Our goal is to effect social change for the betterment of women.

History:
In February 1976, with seed money from the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Women's Center of Montgomery County was founded in Abington. For six years, the Women's Center was a totally volunteer-run organization. During the early years, domestic violence and emergency housing for abused women made up the majority of the calls received by the hotline. Due to this need, in 1980, members of the Women's Center founded Laurel House, the only shelter for abused women in the county. Laurel House was incorporated as a separate agency in 1987.

Today, there are six Women's Center offices with administrative headquarters in Elkins Park.
The office in Norristown (400 Courthouse Plaza)opened to assist women through the court system; there is an additional office in the Courthouse. There are also offices in Pottstown (555 High Street): the Lansdale office located in Central Montgomery Hospital; Bryn Mawr (14 S. Bryn Mawr Ave); and Colmar (2507 N Broad St). The Women's Center is committed to the power of volunteers; currently there are 170 volunteers and a paid staff of 8 full time and 4 part-time employees.
