Caring People Alliance's mission is to empower Philadelphia children and youth to become positive citizens, decision-makers and leaders by providing them, their families and their elders with high quality, community-based programs and services that promote character building, educational achievement, healthy lifestyles and teamwork.
Description:
Caring People Alliance, founded in 1932, is a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the United Way and is one of the Philadelphia region's largest human service agencies. Our primary focus is on children and youth and the matters that most affect them. As such, we also nurture their support system--both families and older adults. We serve an estimated 11,000 individuals and families each year through our community centers and an additional 23,000 members of the community through Child Care Information Services. We offer a wide range of programs and services through our three community centers - R.W. Brown Community Center in lower North Philadelphia, Fels South Philadelphia Community Center and West Philadelphia Community Center - and several additional locations, including neighborhood schools. Our programs include Child Care, Boys & Girls Clubs, Teen Parent Education and Employment Program (TPEEP), Teaming for Technology and Older Adult programs. We also offer five clinical programs and additional services, including Child Care Information Services (CCIS).
History:
Caring People Alliance was founded as Crime Prevention Association of Philadelphia in 1932 by Charles Edwin Fox, District Attorney of Philadelphia, and Samuel S. Fels, a local philanthropist. Their intent was to help youth affected by the Depression to find jobs and become involved in social and recreational programs that would improve their lives. City legal and law enforcement leaders were partners when the first Board shaped its bylaws. In 1937, we chartered the first Philadelphia chapter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Our Board and staff soon realized that supporting at-risk youth also meant supporting their families and communities. This philosophy led to the development of family-focused community centers. The first was in South Philadelphia, followed by Lower North and West Philadelphia. To offer more specialized services, we expanded to other sites, including public schools, where we continue to meet specific needs. Today, Caring People Alliance serves over 20,000 Philadelphia individuals and families each year. Reaching out to families in specific inner-city neighborhoods to strengthen the overall community continues to be at the heart of our mission.
