The Women's Medical Fund (WMF) provides financial and other assistance to low-income women and girls who wish to terminate an unwanted pregnancy but lack the resources for a safe legal abortion. WMF also raises public awareness of the devastating impact of denying access to safe legal abortion, and supports efforts to restore public funding for abortions in Pennsylvania. We are the only organization in Southeastern Pennsylvania fulfilling this mission.
Description:
Women and girls in need of our services reach us through a help line that is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students and volunteers.
Without city, state, or federal funding, WMF depends on donations from individuals and grants from private foundations. We need volunteers to help raise awareness about WMF and money for WMF through their own circle of contacts using house parties and other methods. Staff support provided.
History:
WMF was founded in 1985 after Pennsylvania cut off Medicaid funding for abortions. It is estimated that of the 15,000 poor women and girls seeking an abortion each year in this state, 20% to 35% are forced to carry to term. Tragically, some still attempt a dangerous self-induced abortion. WMF seeks to help the most needy of these women. In 20 years, WMF has been the last hope for over 10,000 women and girls. Thousands more have been helped through referrals, information and advocacy by our trained volunteers and staff.
