The FBD is a non-profit agency that distributes food to the hungry in our community through 355 member agencies and feeding programs. Our mission is a have a community free from hunger. We seek to accomplish this mission by providing low & no cost food to qualified feeding programs; informing the community about hunger issues & food security; and mobilizing support for anti-hunger efforts.

Description:
The FBD is the only facility in Delaware with the equipment, warehouse, and staff to collect donations from all sectors of the food industry and safely and efficiently redistribute it to those who need it the most. Our current programs include: afterschool feeding programs, fresh produce distribution, a mobile pantry, a summer feeding program, a food backpack program, and a Culinary School.

History:
1977: Retha Fisher forms the Food Closet Study Committee.
1981: The committee incorporates as Food Conservers, Inc. which serves approximately 50 member agencies.
1988: The warehouse is completed at the Delaware Industrial Park in Newark, DE. Second Harvest, the national network of food banks, certifies the FBD as a national affiliate.
1991: The program officially changes its name to the Food Bank of Delaware, Inc.
1993: The yearly distribution reaches 3.5 million pounds of food. Retha Fisher announces her retirement as board chair.
1995-1996: The warehouse is expanded to 21,000 square feet. The FBD installs a 220,000 cubic foot freezer. The food distribution site opens at the Burris Warehouse in Milford.
1999: Food distribution doubles to 7 million pounds. Construction of a Milford branch begins.
2000: The FBD distributed 9.7 million pounds of food and served 271 not-for-profit feeding programs. The Milford branch opens to serve Kent & Sussex counties. The mobile pantry program is launched.
2001: The FBD celebrates its 20th anniversary. The first Kids Cafe opens. The construction of the Community Kitchen begins.
