Read Aloud Delaware is a nonprofit organization working to ensure that each preschool child in Delaware is regularly read to one-on-one.
Description:
We promote reading aloud to preschool children in order to encourage a love of books and a desire to become a reader. We recruit volunteers of all ages to read one-on-one to children in child care centers, head starts and schools. We need volunteers to read one-on-one to children, serve as site leaders and on committees, work in the office and special events (such as local festivals, fairs, etc.), and help lead parent workshops. Read Aloud offers an annual conference designed for child care workers, early elementary school teachers, librarians and parents. Between 500 and 600 people attend each year. Our 20th annual conference will be at Caesar Rodney High School on March 11, 2006. In order for this conference to be successful we depend on our volunteers.
History:
Read Aloud Delaware was founded in 1983 by Kevin W. Free and friends and was incorporated in 1984 as the only statewide organization dedicated to the prevention of literacy. In 2004, we had 1,136 volunteers who read to 11,048 children (57,044 individual reading sessions) in 134 sites statewide.
