United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Philadelphia and Vicinity has been working for over 50 years to positively affect the quality of life for children and adults with cerebral palsy and similar disabilities in the five-county Philadelphia area.
Description:
More than 7,000 families are served annually by UCP of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Direct services are provided to over 2,400 children and adults, and include physical, speech, and occupational therapies; early intervention; community sports and recreation; community residential and respite care programs; vocational evaluation and training; job placement and support; group counseling; and daily adult activities. Additionally, close to 5,000 individuals and families receive information about services, living with disabilities, and resources for assistance, including referrals to helping organizations.
History:
While initially founded by a small group of parents to change the lives of children and adults born with cerebral palsy, UCP has expanded its capabilities by providing programs and services to people with a wide variety of physical, mental, hearing and speech impairments including head trauma, Down Syndrome, spinal cord injuries, mental retardation, or any physical condition that severely limit an individual's independent functioning.
