Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic, Inc. (LVA) will vigorously recruit, train and support volunteer tutors in Atlantic and Cape May Counties and provide free, confidential, individualized instruction to adults who want to improve their literacy skills.
Description:
LVA is a volunteer based adult literacy provider that trains and supports individuals who wish to help improve literacy skills in their community. Volunteers receive 15 hours of instruction in teaching basic literacy (reading and writing) and conversational English. They provide educational services to adults free of charge and at a time and location (usually the library) convenient to both student and tutor. Once matched with a student, volunteer tutors offer reading, writing, job-preparedness, conversational English and survival skills instruction. Additionally, tutors serve as mentors and role models for adults as they work toward achieving their educational and personal goals.
History:
LVA began providing literacy instruction to Atlantic County adults in 1983. In 1996 LVA re-incorporated to offer services in Cape May County. After a vigorous accreditation process LVA-Cape-Atlantic Inc. became a fully accredited affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. on September 20, 2000. Last year alone, LVA trained over 70 new tutors who joined our already dedicated force of volunteers and provided over 4,500 hours of instruction to over 300 adults.
