In the spirit of inquiry and discovery embodied by Benjamin Franklin, the mission of The Franklin Institute is to inspire an understanding of and passion for science and technology learning.

Description:
The Franklin Institute is committed to providing quality service and programs to its guests while inspiring a passion for science and technology in an atmosphere of fun and excitement. There are various exhibits, interactive shows as well as the IMAX Theater, Fels Planetarium, and the newly refurbished Franklin Theater. There are permanent exhibits such as "The Train Factory" and "The Giant Heart", as well as traveling exhibits ("Real Pirates" is on the horizon from May 31st - November 2nd! for a current description of traveling exhibits visit www.fi.edu). Volunteers provide support in all areas of the Museum, such as working with visitors out on the floor or working behind the scenes in administrative offices.

History:
The original home of the Franklin Institute (1825 through 1934)was located on the east side of Seventh Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets, which is now the home of the Atwater Kent Museum. The Poor Richards Club and The Franklin Institute conducted a public subscription for funds to build a science museum and memorial to Benjamin Franklin. $5,100,000 was raised in just 12 days. The new Franklin Institute
opened on 20th Street and the Parkway on January 1, 1934.
