Civil Air Patrol, America's Air Force Auxiliary, building the nation's finest force of citizen volunteers--performing missions for America. Mission Statement: To serve America by developing our nation's youth; performing local, state and national emergency and humanitarian missions; and educating our citizens on the impact of aviation and space.
Description:
We are the official, civilian, all-volunteer Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force in the state of Delaware. Our organization has three primary missions: Emergency Services, Cadet Programs, and Aerospace Education. Emergency Services includes Search and Rescue (SAR) and Disaster Relief (DR) activities, for which we train regularly. Pilots and aircrew are needed, as well as Ground Team members, radio operators, and other support personnel. We operate a nationwide radio network, and the largest, privately-owned fleet of Cessna aircraft in the world. Our Cadet Program provides a structured, aerospace-oriented program for youth in the sixth grade and higher. Cadets wear military-style uniforms, and progress in rank by personal accomplishment. Flights in Cessna aircraft and military aircraft are part of the program, as well as the opportunity to participate in the International Air Cadet Exchange program. Scholarships for college, preferential admission to the Air Force Academy, and advanced rank upon enlistment, are all possibilities. Our Aerospace Education program includes teaching our adult and youth members, as well as members of the general public. The National Congress on Aviation and Space Education (NCASE) is a signature annual event enthusiastically received by educators nation-wide.
History:
Founded on 1 December 1941 by civilian pilots, Civil Air Patrol played a vital part in World War II by flying coastal patrol missions, including the sinking of two German U-boats, border patrol, towing aerial gunnery targets, and much more. Our members' contributions were recognized by the U.S. Congress in 1946 when we were chartered as the official Auxiliary of the Air Force. Today we perform 85% of all inland Search and Rescue in the continental U.S.
