The mission of Laurel House is to provide safe haven for abused women and their children, to raise public awareness about domestic violence and to advocate for social change against domestic violence.
Description:
Laurel House provides a number of services and programs for abused women and their children. I: A 30 day community living Shelter for abused women and their children. The shelter can hold up to 27 women and children at one time; II: 24 hour Hot-line which provides free and confidential telephone counseling about domestic abuse; Intake information for the Laurel House shelter program, referrals to other community agencies III: Individual counseling and Support Groups in the community for survivors of domestic violence and their children, and for women seeking help who are in violent relationships IV: A transitional housing program for residents of the shelter; V: Legal Assistance for survivors of domestic violence; VI: Community Education presentations for schools and groups about domestic violence; VII: On-site support and assistance for law enforcement and medical personnel when responding to domestic violence.
History:
Laurel House opened as shelter in 1980 under the guidance of the Women's Center of Montgomery County. In 1981 Laurel House incorporated as an independent agency. Since 1980 Laurel House has grown to contain a variety of comprehensive domestic violence programs serving the Montgomery County community.
