The Arc of Burlington County is a 501 (c)(3) organization serving the needs of adults and children with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities from Burlington County. Our mission is to help those we serve become as independent and self-sufficient as possible and to become active, responsible members of their communities. Programs offered by The Arc include residential, adult vocational services, developmental day care, summer camp, recreation, and provider training. We also operate two thrift stores.
Description:
The Arc's recreation program often needs help during our monthly dances to provide and/or serve refreshments. Our developmental day care needs volunteers to help feed our small children and to help in our nursery, rocking and cuddling babies. Finally, our thrift stores needs volunteers to help work in the store, stock shelves, or sort donations.
History:
The Association for Retarded Children was founded in 1956 by a group of parents frustrated over the inability to find services for their children. As those children grew, the agency's name changed to The Association for Retarded Citizens, and in 1998, we officially became The Arc of Burlington County. The Arc is affiliated with The Arc of New Jersey, an umbrella organization overseeing the individual Arcs in each county of New Jersey. In addition, our parent organization, The Arc of the United States, is the largest organization nationwide serving the needs of individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
