Books Through Bars supports self-educating prisoners by sending free books to them. At the same time, we coordinate a variety of programs to get people on the outside thinking about issues of imprisonment.
Description:
Books Through Bars selects, packs, and sends books to approximately 1,000 prisoners monthly. In addition, we send books to prison libraries nationally and locally; we coordinate service-learning opportunities for groups of volunteers; we consult with other prison book programs; and we have a prisoner art collection that is exhibited several times each year.
History:
Books Through Bars was founded in 1989 by an employee of New Society Publishers who was filling book requests from individual prisoners. Today the organization is run by a collective of 10 people, and receives approximately 1,000 requests from prisoners each month.
