To create a compassionate, informed, open, engaged and vibrant Jewish community - a community that respects its members' diversity... that is proud of its religious and cultural heritage... and that embraces and embodies Jewish values of education, social justice and caring for those in need. Toward that end, we provide comprehensive health, social, cultural and educational services to Jews in need in the Greater Philadelphia area and nationally. Each year, millions of dollars are raised through the Federation Allied Jewish Appeal campaign to support these regional and international programs and services.
Description:
Federation helps - through a network of affiliated agencies - to develop and maintain, in a Jewish framework, high-quality human services to individuals and families. We also help Jews anywhere in the world who are persecuted, oppressed or at risk. We identify communal priorities, raise funds and develop other financial resources, mobilize leadership, develop plans and allocate resources to build a better Jewish community where people can meet their goals and dreams. Federation develops and assists a network of communal organizations to carry out programs and provide services.
History:
The organization was founded in 1901 as the Federation of Jewish Charities; a union of eight agencies dedicated to helping the Philadelphia Jewish community absorb immigrants fleeing religious persecution and economic hardship. Throughout two world wars, the Holocaust, the birth of Israel and the fall of the Soviet Union, Federation has been there for its constituency, developing a growing number of programs and humanitarian services to address the needs of Jews locally and abroad. Today, our network of agencies provides support and assistance to a growing number of Jews in need.
