Angel Flight East (AFE) exists to provide free air transportation to people of all ages whose special medical needs can only be met at health care facilities located far from their hometowns.

Description:
Angel Flight East (AFE) exists to provide free air transportation to people of all ages whose special medical needs — including evaluation, diagnosis, and sometimes even lifesaving treatment for acute, rare, or chronic conditions — can only be met at health care facilities located far from their hometowns.

We also provide timely travel to medical care facilities for patients who can’t withstand traveling long distances by auto, rail, or bus — or for patients whose immune systems would be compromised by traveling in commercial aircraft with the threat of air-borne contagions in re-circulated air.

In addition, our pilots provide what we call ‘compassion flights’ … like flying family members to a critically ill or injured loved one’s bedside. One pilot transported the body of a child to be laid to rest close to her family home. She had been rushed by air ambulance to specialized emergency care in another state, but did not survive.

Our pilots stand ready to serve the community at large as well. AFE is among the first to respond during national disasters. For example, after the horrific 9/11 Twin Towers terrorist attack, AFE was one of the first two non-military aviation organizations to receive clearance to fly. Our pilots flew dozens of missions carrying medical personnel, rescue dogs, blood, and other medical supplies to New York and Washington D.C.

History:
Angel Flight East was founded in 1992 by Harry Morales, a general aviation pilot who wanted to help in relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew. His vision and commitment to the principles of public benefit flying drove the dynamic force of what was to be AFE. Immediately, the organization began to fill-the-gap between the ability to access crucial medical care and the high cost of transportation to get there. In 1993, the first year of operations, AFE’s small band of new volunteer pilots flew 17 missions. Current numbers are much higher. Angel Flight East now flys over 600 missions annually.
