The Mission of Goodwill Industries of Delaware of Delaware County, Inc. Is to improve the quality of life for people with barriers to employment through vocational services and work opportunities.

History:
Incorporated in 1921 by Rev. J. H. Beauchamp at the Asbury Methodist Church, Goodwill Industries of Delaware & Delaware County, Inc. is the oldest non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing vocational services in the State of Delaware. Goodwill operated on the philosophy of "Give a hand up, not a hand out." The purpose was, and still is to discover the productive capabilities inherent in all people. The original intent was to put people to work collecting, repairing, and reselling clothing and household items.
Consistent with it's values, history, and conscious of preserving the public's trust, Goodwill consistently strives to improve efficiencies while diversifying to meet the changing needs of the community. 89% of the revenues generated by the businesses Goodwill operates are spent directly on top quality community-based programs.
Today, well-established successful vocational programs have been designed to educate consumers and provide marketable skills and dependable work habits essential to business and industry. Goodwill continues the tradition of recycling donated items through its Donated Goods Program. While it no longer repairs donated items, Goodwill operates 10 retail outlets, a computer store - Computer Recycling Center, a general auction, a car auction, and an Internet auction site - shopgoodwill.com selling gently used clothing and other merchandise to the public at an affordable price. This practice not only helps fund job training and placement programs, but also offers the community an environmentally healthy alternative for the disposal of unwanted but still useable clothing, household items, vehicles, electronics, sporting equipment and other goods. In addition, Goodwill operates a Janitorial Service, Temporary Staffing Service and an industrial outsourcing Contract Service which not only provides employment and training opportunities, but much needed business services to the community.
