The Mission of Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve is to lead people to a greater appreciation of native plants, to an understanding of their importance to all life and to a commitment to the preservation of a healthy and diverse natural world.
Description:
Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve showcases an extraordinary diversity of plants native to Pennsylvania and Delaware Valley region. The Preserve focuses exclusively on native plants in distinction from botanical gardens that may include natives in their collections. We care for and protect our native plant collection with the goal of encouraging the public to visit, enjoy and learn about the richness of Pennsylvania's natural heritage so that they might become stewards of the natural world. Visitors have many opportunities to enjoy the Preserve and learn about native plants. They can walk outdoors on our many trails. We offer guided walks form March through October daily. They also can spend time in the visitor center where we have an indoor bird observatory that showcases mounted birds and their nest, wildflower videos and exhibits, and free plant information. We offer classes and lectures throughout the year as well as native plants sales and other special events such as Earth Day,Wildflower Weekend and Community Day. All of this provides an excellent opportunity for volunteers seven days a week. Whether you can spend one hour or the whole day, the possibilities are endless and very flexible.Whether you would like to spend time in propagation, visitor services, administration support, education, grounds or trail maintenance, there is a place for you with complete training.
History:
Mrs. Henry C Parry, Chairman of the Bucks County Federation of Women's Clubs and Mr Wilson Heinitsh,of Washington Crossing Historic Park were inspired by the quiet beauty of the woods and creek nearby. They imagined a sanctuary for native plants with nature trails winding through wildflowers, a place where visitors could enjoy this natural splendor year round. A gift from the Council for the Preservation of Natural Beauty in Pennsylvania to the Washington Crossing Park Commission made Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve a reality. In 1934 the Commission set aside 100 acres in Washington Crossing Historic Park just south of New Hope, Pa. Through the years, the Preserve has become known as the State Wildflower Preserve of Pennsylvania.
